About this tool and its examples
A free browser-based video frame extractor for local videos, with image, contact sheet and PDF storyboard exports.
VideoFrameLab is a browser-based website. We do not publish an official Android or iOS app.
Requires JavaScript and a browser that can run the workbench. Video codec support varies; eligible files can use the local compatibility decoder.
The examples below use synthetic videos. The image is an actual export, and the timeline is an illustration of requested sample times. Your video file is not uploaded for processing.

Example output
One moment, saved as a still.
Captured at one second from our synthetic sunset clip and exported at its original size.
- Format
- PNG
- Size
- 720 × 480
- Time

Frequently asked questions
Which videos can I open?
Start with MP4 with H.264 or WebM with VP8 or VP9. Support depends on the codec inside the file and on your browser. VideoFrameLab tries compatibility processing for eligible files the browser cannot open directly.
What is the maximum video file size?
The input limit is 200 MiB for browser decoding and 32 MiB for compatibility processing. Both limits apply to the file you open. To reduce its size, make a smaller copy in a local editor first.
How many frames can I capture at once?
Check Estimated frames and the Frame limit before you start. Larger frames can reach the processing budget sooner. Increase the interval, lower the count or export one range before capturing another.
How can I add one more frame to a batch?
Use Manual capture to add a still to the current library. If the compatibility decoder opens the video without a preview, set Range start and use Capture range start. Save your picks before starting a new batch, which replaces the library.
What time is shown on a captured frame?
The label shows the time you asked the tool to sample. The decoded picture can come from a nearby point. If a still lands on the wrong side of a cut, try a slightly earlier or later time.
Why do several captured frames look the same?
A static shot can look identical at many points. Closely spaced requests may also land on the same decoded picture. Increase the interval to see more of the clip.
Can PNG improve a blurry still?
PNG preserves the image it receives, including blur already in the video. Try a nearby moment when the subject is steadier and use Original size to keep the captured dimensions.
Can I extract frames from a video URL?
VideoFrameLab opens video files saved on your device. Choose your local copy in the file picker or drag it into the workspace.
Does my video stay on my device?
Yes. Decoding, frame selection and export happen in your browser. The site can download a compatibility decoder when needed while the video file stays on your device.
